The famous whitewashed windmills, trademark of the island, are standing on a hill overlooking the city. You can find them in the area between Alefkandra and Neochori. Most windmills face on the North in order to take advantage of the winds which mostly blow from the North. There are currently 16 windmills on Mykonos of which seven are positioned on the landmark hill in Chora. Most of them were built by the Venetians in the 16th century, but their construction continued into the early 20th century. They were primarily used to mill wheat. They were an important source of income for the inhabitants. Their use gradually declined until they ceased production in the middle of the 20th century.

The island of Delos, located west of Mykonos, is a must visit as it is one of the most important mythological, historical and archaeological sites in Greece. It is an UNESCO World Heritage site. For over a thousand years, Delos, also referred to as the Isle of Light, was a sacred island. The island was first inhabited by the Greeks from 3000 BC. Around 800 BC the island became a shrine to the god Apollo and eventually it became a multicultural trading centre. Under Roman rule, Delos became an important duty-free port and slave market but by 300 AD, after the trade routes moved on, Delos was completely abandoned.

Manto Mavrogenous, a heroine of the Greek War of Independence (1821-1829), was one of the few women who excelled in the war. She was baptised as Magdalene and she was born into a wealthy Greek family, in Trieste, in 1796. Her father, Nicholas Mafrogennis, was a merchant from the Cyclades, and her mother was a Mykonian noble woman named Zacharatos Antonios Hatzis Bati. With the outbreak of the Greek Revolution she left Tinos, where she had been living after her father's death in 1818, and moved to Mykonos where she led the rebellion of the island against the Turks. Finally she was given the honorary rank of General – her being the only woman to achieve such a status- and was offered a residence in the first capital of Greece, Nafplio.

The Church of Panagia Paraportiani in Mykonos, Cyclades: The lovely church of Panagia (Virgin Mary) Paraportiani is among the most photographed churches not only in Mykonos but in the whole world. It is located at the entrance of Kastro neighborhood, right by the sea. Its name (Paraportiani) actually means standing next to the entrance door, meaning that the church was next to the Castle door. The special thing about this church is that it actually consists of five small churches that were built one on top or next to the other. The church of Agios Efstathios is the center of this complex, surrounded by the churches of Agios Anargyros, Agios Sozon, and Agia Anastasia. On top of these four churches, there is the church of the Virgin Mary, which looks like a dome. The five churches were not constructed at once, but gradually along centuries. The oldest church is Agios Anargyros, which was built in the late 14th century. The other churches were built in the 16th and the 17th century, while there were renovations till 1920

Ano Mera is located almost in the heart of the island, just 8 km from the capital of Mykonos, Chora. With a population of 1459 inhabitants, Ano Mera is the picturesque village one comes across along the northeast shores of the island. It not only stands out for its classical Cycladic beauty, but also for its scenic streets and traditional taverns. In Ano Mera one may visit the historic monastery of Panagia Tourliani, one of the main attractions of the whole island, built in the 15th century. The all-white monastery is located right in front of the main square of the village. The whole village of Ano Mera has been developed mainly around this monastery. The square, which became pedestrianised in 2001, is surrounded by traditional cafes and taverns, renowned for their excellent Mykonian meats done on the spit and barbecue. Apart from the exceptional meat, Mykonos is also known for the spicy cheese accompanying the local delicacies. Also, in the village, one finds the “Kopanisti” workshop, where all the secrets of preparation of that spicy cheese are concealed. So if you find yourself in this village do not hesitate to astray into the quaint alleys and ensure that you try homemade local recipes. It will be like a temporary visit to “another” Mykonos ..!

Mykonos town , called Chora (Hóra) by the locals is the buggest attraction of the island. In contrast to other Cycladic capitals, the capital town (Hóra) of the island is not built in the shape of an amphitheatre but instead spreads out over a wide area. The Town Hall, built in 1780, is an early neoclassic-style, two-storey building with a tiled roof. Mykonos chora has whitewashed cubic houses with wooden coloured doors, windows and balconies, narrow streets forming a labyrinth, beautiful churches, lovely chapels and purple bougainvilleas contrasting with the bright white of the buildings walls. The heart of the city is closed to traffic during most of the day which make the walk among the labyrinth streets particularly agreeable, especially during early morning when the city is calmer for most of the people are at the beaches or still sleeping after a long night of clubbing. The main town can be traveled on foot and beware that it is simply not practical to enter the main part of town on scooters/cars because of the narrowness of the lanes. During evening hours the main roads into town are blocked off. Numerous cafes, chic boutiques, souvenir shops and fine jeweleries are helping the visitor to enjoy its days in the beautiful capital of Mykonos

Beaches

Ten minutes walk from the center of Mykonos Town. Megali Ammos is a beach without any umbrellas and sunbeds because of the fact that there are very strong northern winds. One characteristic about the Megali Ammos beach and in particular of the bottom of the sea there is a huge slab so it makes it a little difficult to swim. It is a good place to relax on the sand or just take a walk along the shore. There are a few hotels and apartments and a small traditional tavern just a few steps from the seashore.

Widely agreed to be the best restaurant on the island, M – Eating is all white-linen service on an outdoor terrace looking out onto a tiny, cobbled street, soft lighting and attentive service. The chef transforms local ingredients into visual masterpieces and waiters are happy to suggest Greek wines to pair your dishes with. Choose from the likes of lamb sous vide, slow-cooked veal on eggplant puree, tuna carpaccio with lentils and scallops on baked apple. Don’t miss out on their sweet specialty: Mykonos honey pie. It is a dinner-only restaurant and a prior reservation is essential to avoid any hassle.
