Sightseeing
Stunning views from the summit.
Must do while visiting is a walk up Mt Paku (40-60 minutes each way from 'The Lodge'). Alternatively take the car to the carpark at the children's playground half way up and walk from there. 10 minute walk with a bit of a scrabble over boulders at the end. Views stunning right out to the Alderman islands & many others. Also some historic facts placards as you walk through the bush and arrive at the top.

Pack a picnic and enjoy it under the shade of the pohutukawa trees that line the beach or in the bushy glean near the grave site across the creek

Natural river swimming hole
About 20 minutes south turn right near Hikuwai for that natural swimming hole experience and a change from the beach. Create your own fun taking bombs from Frog rock, skim stones in the river or take a calm soak in the cool deep but safe swimming hole.
Ask at the information centre in town about directions.
