Sightseeing

For a proper full day out at the beach, we’d definitely suggest you go to Sharrow or Tregantle Beaches (known collectively as Whitsand Bay) which are a 15 min drive to the east, past the village of Crafthole and past Tregantle Fort. Both are a fairly steep 5 min ramble down the cliff but it’s definitely well worth it. These beaches are picturesque and brilliant for bodyboarding or surfing, clambering over rocks and exploring.

Downderry Beach, at the bottom of the street, is great for rock pooling & swimming and you can easily launch a stand-up paddleboard or canoe. At the western end of the village (a 5 min drive or 15 min walk) there’s Seaton beach which has a lifeguard, a good café, a pub and a car park.

Head east through the village for the famous South West Coastal Path. It is a breath-takingly beautiful cliff-top walk. You can go as far as Poole if you want! In the other direction, you can walk through the village and just keep going west on the South West Coastal Path towards Looe and Polperro.

We thoroughly recommend a visit to the Rame Peninsula (visible to the east from Downderry beach). This stunning peninsula is definitely worth a trip - either just as a beautiful drive, or leave the car at the car park by the lighthouse and enjoy the breath- taking walk right to the tip.

Things To Do!

Nearby Adrenaline Quarry is a brilliant place for some active adventures.... For the brave, there’s a zip-wire over the quarry or a swing which goes right out over a 50m drop. There’s also a wonderful inflatable adventure assault course in the water, which is fun for the whole family. At the same location you can also do go-karting or even learn to throw axes! Other adventurous activities locally include bouldering at The Sardine Factory in Looe or you can hire a canoe / paddle board etc at nearby Millandreth or Looe. Don’t forget about adventurebay.co.uk for surf lessons and paddle boarding!

Looe is only 6 miles away – a picturesque river/seaside town. It can get busy and touristy in summer but sometimes that’s just what you need! The pretty streets are definitely worth a stroll around. The pasties from Sarah’s Pasty Shop, the fudge from Roly’s and the bubble waffles from the Dog and Waffle by the beach all come highly recommended! As do the boat trips around Looe Island, especially on the glass bottom boat! There’s an excellent fishmonger by the harbour; some inflatable fun by the river in summer; and an indoor arcade. The other past- time you should try is crabbing! There are buckets, lines and bacon-bits sold everywhere in the town and the harbour walls are strewn with hopeful families, often with a few crabs in their buckets! You could also visit the ‘Paint A Pot’ shop to create your own souvenir. Just remember you’ll need to pop back to pick it up a few days later.

Polperro is the quintessential Cornish fishing village. Excellent pub lunches are served and the pretty streets are great for an afternoon stroll. If you’re feeling energetic, we highly recommend the walk along the South West Coastal path from Looe to Polperro is pretty incredible, and you’ll definitely earn the pint or pub lunch at the end!

Fowey is a beautiful, upmarket seaside town, definitely worth the 21 mile drive. We’d recommend using the Bodinnick Ferry which is £9 return but cuts off significant mileage and travel time and is a fun way to enter the town. There are some lovely boutiques and art galleries. Hire a self-drive boat from the harbour!

Plymouth has everything a larger city can offer including all the big shops, restaurant chains, cinemas and a theatre etc. The Aquarium is world class and definitely worth a visit. And you’ll easily wile away several hours strolling around the beautiful Artists’ Quarter.

The picturesque sea-side villages of Kingsand and Cawsand make a lovely trip. If you head over to this area then the beautiful Mount Edgcumbe House and Parks are beautiful to visit – it’s a stunning historic park with forest trails, segway trips and the café in the Orangery is recommended! Also, in this area is the historic Antony House which is well worth a visit (a magnificent 18th Century house with landscaped gardens).

For Foodies!

For convenient, decent pub food you can’t go wrong with the Inn On The Shore. It’s in the centre of the village, down the side of the church hall or a 9 min walk along the beach. (Innontheshore. co.uk)
