An interesting piece of history, James Lynch, Mayor of Galway in the 15th century sent his son on a sea voyage to collect wine from Spain. On the return home due to situations occurring on the voyage, his son plotted to commit murder against one of the Spaniards on board his ship. He woke him in the middle of the night and had him thrown overboard. When his father got word of this, he was furious and to keep good faith with the city people hung his son out of the large window of their home. The original window can be seen on Lombard Street. Historians claim this is where the term Lynching originated from.
