Gas City I-69 Speedway is located on the eastern edge of Gas City, Indiana, a city where its name may bring odd expressions from outsiders who know nothing about its history and the gas boom days. Formerly known as Harrisburg, Gas City began as a “Boom Town” when an abundance of natural gas was found in the vicinity in 1887. Following the discovery of natural gas, several citizens formed the Gas City Land Company on March 21, 1892. Several days later, the name of Harrisburg was changed to Gas City. Located approximately 70 miles north of Indianapolis, Gas City I-69 Speedway opened in1986. Bull Bradley was one of the original co-owners. After operating for a few years the track went dormant for several years until local businessman Jack Himelick purchased the facility in 1996. Himelick has made significant upgrades during his ownership. He brought in Jiggs Thomason in 1997 to promote the ¼-mile, semi-banked clay oval in 1997 and the two enjoyed a successful 17-year run until Thomason’s retirement. In recent years various promoters have rented the facility for special events only. Motorsports executive Jerry Gappens, a Kokomo, Indiana native, leased the facility in 2018 and is returning to a full season schedule of weekly racing events. Notable drivers who have competed at the speedway include four-time NASCAR Cup Champion Jeff Gordon, who raced winged sprint cars here in the late 1980s. Popular regional/local drivers J.J. Yeley, Cory Kruseman, Levi Jones, Tony Elliott, Dave Darland have also enjoyed success at Gas City.

Marion's Mississinewa Riverwalk The scenery keeps changing as the river winds towards the Wabash. Even when the path veers off from the river, I still feel close to the water while walking through woods. The last mile or so is in the beautiful Matter Park.

Matter Park has been the pride of Marion since the 1890's. The Gardens of Matter Park would be outstanding for a city of any size, let alone for Marion (population 28,000). It is kept clean, has tennis courts, walking paths, a lake, Frisbee area, concert stage and Christmas light display. In the Summer, local artists display their work, while local musicians perform.

In 1888, Colonel George W. Steele, Indiana’s congressional representative, successfully convinced his colleagues in Washington, D.C., of the need for a Soldier’s Home in Grant County. Subsequently, the 31-acre Marion Branch of the National Home opened in 1889 to provide shelter and comfort for the region’s veterans. Along with the home, a cemetery was established for the interment of the men who died there. The first burial occurred two years after the home opened in May 1890. For most of its history, the cemetery at the Marion Home has quietly and efficiently cared for the needs of the nation’s veterans with few significant changes. In 1920, the home was renamed Marion Sanatorium and in 1930, administration of the home was transferred to the newly created Veterans Administration. Additional acreage was transferred from the Veterans Health Administration twice in the cemetery’s history. Six acres were added in 1974 and six more in 1988. As of 1973, with the passage of the National Cemetery Act, the cemetery became part of the National Cemetery system and its name was changed to Marion National Cemetery. Marion National Cemetery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
