Appalachian Mountain Brewery (AMB) was dreamt-up and brought to life by founders Nathan Kelischek and Chris Zieber; two cousins who both bring unique skills and passions to the table. Their German heritage, love for our state and passion for the environment and outdoors has helped to form the vision of AMB. Stop for a pint!! Upon opening the taproom in 2013, AMB became known as the first brewery in Boone, and quickly became known for brewing award-winning, high-quality beers and ciders.

Situated on Hardin Street across from the campus of Appalachian State, come visit us at the original Stick Boy location where we have been sharing our love of food with High Country since 2001. Using traditional ingredients and methods, we produce a wide range of baked goods and also have a full espresso and smoothie bar. We only have about a dozen parking spots and even fewer seats, but in this bustling production bakery you’ll find naturally fermented sourdough loaves, chocolate torte, cream cheese cinnamon rolls and a delicious frothy cappuccino.

Downtowns in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia, enjoy the same friendly and knowledgeable service that welcomed neighbors in Valle Crucis. As a general store, Mast Store offers a variety of goods from fashion to fried chicken cookbooks and toffee to tents.

Beautiful State Park to explore- Elk Knob State Park features one of the highest peaks in North Carolina’s high country at 5,520 feet and one of the parks system’s finest trails to the spectacular views from the summit. Other trails are being developed at this relatively new park. Despite its location in an area known for winter weather, the park attempts to stay open throughout the winter and is the only one in the system offering cross-country skiing (although skiers must provide their own equipment). At lower elevations, there are primitive, backcountry campsites for individuals and for groups. Elk Knob is an outstanding park for experiencing all seasons in the mountain environment.

Appalachian Ski Mtn. had its beginning December 4, 1968, when Grady Moretz and four other partners purchased the area from the Northwestern Bank at foreclosure at a public auction. Built six years earlier by Mr. M.E. Thalheimer of Selma, Alabama, the ski area was known as Blowing Rock Ski Lodge, Inc. Blowing Rock Ski Lodge was a public, stock owned company and first opened in the winter of 1962-63. It was the first ski area in Northwestern North Carolina and the second oldest ski area in the State, Cataloochee having opened the previous winter.

Banner Elk is one of the loftiest towns in the mountainous High Country region-at 3,739 feet above sea level. The towering peaks of Grandfather Mountain command the skyline, as do the two biggest ski areas in the High Country, Beech and Sugar mountains. The lofty ski hubs of both Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain are towns, too. No wonder Banner Elk license plates proclaim it the, "Ski Capital of the South."
