The Acclaimed Chef at Il Capriccio grew up with me locally. He is very personable and friendly. He has appeared on many TV shows, magazines and articles and people travel to visit this well-known restaurant, but it is right here in our village of Caranna! My favorite is the Lagostini pasta (lobster), my wife recommends the funghi pasta (mushroom) and our son recommends the pizza!! Add a glass (or bottle) of wine, and everyone is happy! It is normal and customary to tip the parking attendant. You park your car but he watches over it in their private parking lot. No reservations and no tipping in restaurants in Italy.

Known as the "History bar" as it's local name, it is in Cisternino and has a lovely outdoor space with amazing views overlooking the valley below. There are plenty of umbrellas to provide shade and there is usually a breeze due to the location. Nice variety of drinks, coffee, desserts and gelato. There is also street parking (although some areas require a pre-paid ticket be placed in the window). It is a great place to start or end your walk thru the historic center and is right near the sites mentioned in the Cisternino city link (check it out).

This beautiful restaurant is owned by another friend of ours. It is rustic inside and also has great outdoor tables in the hot summer months. It is located near Chiesa di San Nicola Matrice (St Nicolas Church) on the pedestrian bridge of Il Ponte. Beautiful area and delicious food. We often go there for date night or an Anniversary.

This cave is amazing and you take guided tours in small groups. Be prepared for much cooler temperatures underground - a cool relief to the summer heat! You will pay to park and for entrance. It is located near Bari which is roughly a HALF hour from our location.

City/town information

This is a well known tourist spot as the entire village of Alberobello is made up of a dense area of traditional Trulli (plural form of trullo) buildings! Trulli are unique to the Puglia region and are round rooms with cone roofs made of stone. Trulli were generally constructed as temporary field shelters and storehouses and later as more permanent dwellings groups together or added to more rectangular rooms. You can find tours but most visitors like to walk around and explore on their own.

Martina Franca is in the Valle d'Itria and about 30 minutes away. When driving from our rental you will see the city perched up on a hill. Be sure to walk to a bar or restaurant on the outside of town where you will see the sea past the fields. Pictured is the Chiesa Parrocchiale della Madonna del Carmine (church) and is right behind Piazza Plebiscito, both beautiful photo opportunities. Church of Saint Dominic is also popular. Russoli is a farm with donkeys and great for kids! Museo MuBa-Basilica San Martino is a museum. Piazza Roma is right in front of Palazzo Ducale and has a beautiful fountain, grass, trees and benches. Palazzo Ducale is a historical landmark and is a palace dating back to 1834. It requires tickets and tours are available. Porta di Santo Stefano is a historical landmark.

Located on the hilltop of the Murge Plateau, Locorotondo is named one of the most beautiful of Italy. Visit Centro Storico Locorotondo (historic center) for amazing architecture surrounded by beautiful colorful planters of flowers, in a circular shape. In fact Locorotondo means "round place". Chiesa Madre San Giorgia (st. George the Martyr Church )is right in the center of town along with the clock tower and Morelli Palace. Chiesa della Madonna dell Greca is the oldest church in Locorotondo. Chiesa di San Nicola di Myra is a beautiful church built around 1660. It is a tiny church surrounded by houses so don't miss it! Palazzo Morelli for architectural buildings Parco Comunale is a park with stunning views day and night. Cardone winery tour. Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II is in the historic walking area.

Cisternino is a personal favorite, as it the the city where I spent my childhood! This quaint city is a jewel with amazing food and whitewashed alleyways with historic trulli (they're not just in Alberobello)! The 14th century church dedicated to St. Nicholas is locally known as Chiesa Matrice and is beautiful and possibly better at night when lit up. It is where I got married so I may be biased but it is truly lovely and you MUST go inside to see! Don't miss any of the alcoves and take a walk all the way back to the alter! Inside you will find the Madonna del Cardellino statue dating back to 1517! Across the street is the Villa Comunale. It's a small park with a war memorial at it's center that dates back to 1924! You will often find groups of elderly men chatting on the benches daily. Piazza dell'Orologio (formally called Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II) is in the city center where you will find the historic 1850 clock tower (Torre dell'Orologio). This is a great place to hang out for a drink, gelato and several nice restaurants on the square and the alleyways surrounding it. Pineta is a local park, one of the few green spaces with grass and a lot of shady trees. It is lovely with AMAZING views of the valley below. There are a lot of benches and a small park for the children. It is a favorite local hangout for all ages! Across the street from Pineta you'll find Chiesa di San Quirico built in the early 1600's and was dedicated to San Quirico and his mother, San Giulitta martyred at the beginning of the 4th century under the empire of Diocletian in Turkey. Legend has it that in the 17th century when the plague raged through Puglia, on the site where the church now stands, San Quirico appeared who with a miraculous gesture, managed to free the city from the plague. The people in gratitude, dedicated the church of San Quirico at that point, outside the walls. At the entrance in a protruding triangle with a half moon shape with the statue of San Quirico in the center.

This is our favorite seaside village. The coastline has many different types of beaches from black lava rocks to crushed shells to sand! There are many alcoves along Via Torre Canne where you can pull your car off and park yourself. If you don't care for the ground, just drive further and it will change! There are many beach clubs to choose from as well where you will pay for parking and additionally for lounge chairs (sometimes required sometimes you can use your towel) and umbrellas. There is typically a restaurant there as well. Prices for the beach clubs vary with the luxury of amenities and restaurant level from a small bar to a white tablecloth dining room. Food and drinks are an additional cost. You can also find a large sandy beach near the marina but street parking can be difficult to find and the narrow roads tend to be one way. There is a paid parking lot at the marina if you're lucky enough to find parking. Any spot you choose, you will be swimming in the Adriatic Sea and it is just gorgeous!
