Food scene

A swanky Tapas Bar on one side and an excellent formal Restaurant on the other. Situated right around the corner from the apartment, it is said to be one of the very best restaurants in Cádiz, if not Andalucía. Fish is their specialty, and they are also famous for their tortillitas de camarones. (fried shrimp in batter) The tapas bar serves esentially the same food as the main restaurant in smaller portions (tapas, raciones, media raciones). One important point to note, unlike some of the more tourism dependent restaurants in Cádiz, this place is a year round favourite of the local gaditanos, so Spanish is the main language you will hear spoken and it is often times very busy and if you dont speak Espanol, it can feel a little bit of a challenge at first. This place is the real deal though, so if you love your food, stick with it. Standing at the tapas bar is a great place to start with and watch all the delicious tapa whizzing by! After a visit or two you will get the hang of it and go from there! Some of our favourite Tapa; Tortillitas de camarones - Fried Shrimp in batter Morena Frita en Adobo - Fried Moray Eels Erizo de Mar Relleno- Sea urchin stuffed with shrimp tartar, sea urchin roe and oxigarum foam. Croquet de Jamon Iberico Judiones con Ahumados-Largebeans with smoked fish salad Guiso de Garbanzos con Choco- Chickpea stew with Cuttlefish Bolo de Caco gaditano- Payoyo cheese and special Chiccarones Salpicon de Pescados y Mariscos - Fish and shellfish salad Favourite Main dishes to eat in the bar; Pescado de roca a la roteña- Rockfish with red peppers Seco Negro con chocos guisados- dry black rice with stewed Cuttlefish. Splash out meal in the main restaurant; Lubina a la plancha al ajillio - Sea bass on the bone with oil and garlic Urta a la plancha al ajillo - Red Sea Bream, on the bone with oil and garlic, an incredible fish

Really excellent seafood restaurant. Over in the new town, facing the beachfront with lovely sea views. They have an extensive and varied menu, buzzing atmosphere and a cool sea themed decor. Dining here always feels like a special occasion to us. The fish is the star here – they really know how to cook tuna and while available the atún de Almadraba is something special (ask them which cut they recommend). Also watch out for a fish called a Spanish Urta or Red Sea Bream which Martin recommended to us, saying it tastes like a cross between crab and prawns because thats what it feeds on. Incredible delicate tasting and textured fish. Grilled Whole Sea Bass is excellent as is the Galician Octopus with potatoes and paprika also. Cosiderably more pricey than the average place to eat but thats reflected in the quality of the food and the setting and worth every cent. They have an online reservations system which works very well. The rice dishes here are also very good and very popular, though only served at lunchtime and are for two to share similar to Paella - The arroz del señorito (all peeled seafood ingredients) is great for kids, the arroz negro (intensely black from the squid ink) is amazing and the arroz en salsa verde con almejas y gambas (rice with parsley and garlic sauce with clams and prawns) is one of their specialties and something that you won't find every day

Right in the heart of the Mercado Central, the freshest and highest quality fish is selected daily by the owner from his suppliers just a few feet away in the market stalls. The Tuna Tataki is superb here, its actually our favourite place to eat Tuna in Cádiz but it's all really excellent. There are not many tables available to sit at here, so pick your moment to visit when you can get a seat and savour it. Also its superb value for money.

Consistently great little modern bar and restaurant serving excellent food (sometimes with an Asian twist) and good wines by the glass. Friendly and helpful staff speak English. A very popular restaurant, so its best to book ahead if you want a table. They also have seats at the bar, which are on a first come basis, so if you arrive before they open at 8:30 you can be reasonably sure of getting a seat there. Excellent value for money. One of their specialties here is Roasted Octopus (pulpo) and its really delicious, as are the King Prawn Tacos with guacamole and Mexican sauce Also try their Smoked aubergine with Goats cheese, basil and dried tomatoes which is a favourite of ours. Really good Bravas here too

This is consistently good and a lovely setting, alfresco dining in an open little square. It doesn't look anything special at all but it's always crammed with locals, which should tell you everything you need to know. Don't look for anything fancy here; they serve very simple fresh food (predominantly seafood) that is well cooked and cheap. Professional and friendly service coupled with its reliability is why it is always full when the weather is good. You will definitely need to book ahead here on a sunny weekend. Try the grilled Urta, a delicious rockfish or grilled Dorada (black bream). The almejas marinara (clams) here are very good also. The only downside here is a limited wine list.

If you've had enough fish in Cádiz, this is the place to come for some really good traditionally cooked meats and stews, with hams and sausages hanging all over the place. Tapas bar at the front, restaurant at the back (if you're lucky you'll be served by a fearsome bull of a man that looks like he takes his food as seriously as he does. (regularly excellent recommendations, mind you!). Always extremely busy - we would recommend getting there early and sitting at the bar, that way you have the entire range of bar tapa available to you and can also order larger portions from the menu of the restaurant at the back if you wish. The food comes out quickly and in no particular order so we find it best to order as you eat rather than ending up being served it all at once! The stand out Dish for us here is the tapa of Abanico al Pedro Ximimez, this is a simple looking Iberico rib meat stew with potatoes, but the flavour of the sauce and tenderness of the meat is sublime-its pure comfort food. Try also the tapa or bigger ración of carrillada Iberica picante (slightly spicy slow-cooked Iberian pig cheek stew) The tapa of spicy hot Chorizo skewers is also excellent as is the Montadito de paleta y presa iberica (juicy pork steak topped with Iberican jamón in a bread roll), or if you want something more substantial try the excellent Entrecote de presa Iberica (juicy shoulder steak) or the local beef (Carne Retinto). Good selection of well priced wine, too.

A bar always buzzing with local characters and not to be missed, especially considering it's proximity to the apartment. There's bullfighting memorabilia, ancient tiled floors and old photos all the way up to the ceilings. They serve good simple tapas on greaseproof paper rather than plates (try the jamón or the chicharrones (slow-roasted belly pork). Not much seating once it's busy but there's a few sherry barrels to sit around outside and a great place for people watching. Hugely popular place so get there early to secure a seat at the bar or one of the outside tables

This is a tiny family run bar with sherry barrell tables outside which we find more pleasant to sit at rather than inside. The simple tapas here are really tasty and among the most reasonably priced you will find anywhere, with an excellent selection of good wines. The Aubergines stuffed with cheese, Albondigas chocos (cuttlefish) and Cazon (dogfish)stew are our favourites. Highly recommended but be sure to get there early! Very friendly English speaking owner and staff. Perfect spot for grazing and it is right next door to the apartment. Only opens Thursday or Friday - Sunday, dependent on season. Hugely popular with the locals, tells you all you need to know!

A hole in the wall plain little family run bar. Simple food, wonderfully prepared, also a local favourite. The best quality v price combination we have found to date in Cádiz. Great spot for a lunchtime snack. The grilled seafood on skewers are something else here! Monkfish, with a crispy char on the outside and yet just perfectly cooked inside. Ditto for Gambas , bacon and mushroom skewers. Or you could just have the 1/2 dozen juicey tiger prawns. Fabulous!

One or two really good dishes worth coming here to try, the Grilled Artichokes topped with either Jamon or Anchovies are excellent. The sizzling Gambas in olive oil are very good too. The downside here is prices are relatively high for many of the main courses, particularly for the fish, for what is really average enough food overall in our view

Wonderfully atmospheric little sherry bar that hasn't changed much since the early 1900s. Try a cold fino with a few olives here before having lunch in La Candela on the same road. Or else do a thorough tasting journey through the different Sherry types, all the way from Manzanilla to brandy (and stagger all the way home!). English spoken.

Across the street from the Central Market, this is a lovely French Patisserie style cafe, run by a french family, where they serve delicious homemade pastries. A lovely spot to enjoy a morning coffee and cake, or one of their tasty Jamon and Queso Bocadillos. Their fresh strawberry tartlets are amazing! Best to sit at one of the outside tables on the pavement in the morning sun and watch the world go by. The only drawback is they only have 6 outside tables available on the pavement, and it's nearly always mad busy.

Sightseeing

Directly across the street from the apartment. Stunningly beautiful and safe for swimming, blue flag sheltered beach. One of our favourite things to do here is an early morning walk. Start by walking out and back the causeway to the Castillo and then turn right along the promenade. At the Cathedral turn left and cross the peninsula to reach the promenade on the other side. Following this around by the sea wall back to the apartment, takes in the stunningly beautiful Jardines de Alameda Apodaca and right by the Genovese Park. It is a beautiful loop and a wonderful way to start your day.
