Wildlife Viewing

Killin Wetlands is one of the few remaining peat wetlands in the region. Peat soil is made when the leaves from pond lilies, willows and other wetland plants sink to the wetland floor and then partially decompose. Think of it like wetland compost: it’s dark and rich, light and spongy. This process draws carbon out of the atmosphere and stores, or sequesters, it in the wetland.

Banks-Vernonia State Trail is the first “rails-to-trails” park in Oregon. The trail follows an abandoned railroad bed that stretches 21 miles between the cities of Banks and Vernonia. The Buxton Trailhead features an amazing 80’ curved wooden trestle over Mendenhall Creek. The trail consists of a paved 8-foot wide hiking and bicycle trail alongside a gravel trail for horses that's about 4-foot wide in most sections. The gentle grade allows hikers, bicyclists, equestrians and people of all abilities to enjoy the scenic mountains, fields and forests of Washington and Columbia counties.

The Tillamook Spit: Unusual flat loop hike on a narrow, yet hilly peninsula separating the Tillamook Bay and the Pacific Ocean. There once was a resort here; hotel, a dance hall, even a glass enclosed swimming pool. And over a few wild winters in the 1900s the ocean washed it all away. Today there are pines, blueberries, mushrooms, herons and egrets and a long strand of beach with sand dunes. Start walking north along the water, to the tip of the land, around to the rock jetty that protects the entrance to the bay, turn south, toward the sun and follow the foamy water’s edge back to your car.
