William and Mary is the nation's second oldest college, and was chartered February 8, 1693. The Sir Christopher Wren Building at the College is the oldest academic building in continuous use within the United States. The original Wren building was constructed between 1695 and 1699, before Williamsburg was even founded, and the Virginia colony's capital was still located at Jamestown. Though the building has been destroyed three times by fire, each time it has been rebuilt, with the current building dating from 1862.
