This museum tells the not well-known, but absolutely fascinating story of Leon Trotsky, founding father of the USSR, and his time in Mexico before his untimely assassination at his home in Coyoacán. Learn about Trotsky's life, legacy, and enduring connection with his Mexican leftist contemporaries such as Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and David Siqueiros.

UNAM is an incredible place where the spirit of youth and learning is alive! Nearly free of charge for all students (even foreigners), it is a place where people from all walks of life come together for study, discussion, performance and socializing. Built in the 1950s on volcanic rock typical of the area south of the ancient lake, UNAM is a building project on a scale like no other in CDMX. It's so big, it has it's own bus system called the PumaBus. My favorite things to do at UNAM include the main library with murals on all sides designed by muralist Juan O'Gorman, the Olympic Stadium with large mural by Diego Riveria, the MUAC modern art museum, and the sculpture park (near the MUAC).

Getting Around

One of the two closest metro stops. 20-30 minute walk from centro Coyoacán. You could also take the pesero (microbus) to get there. The closest stop is at the intersection of Calle Xicoténcatl & Gómez Farias. Costs 5 pesos to ride the metro. Beware while riding, especially at night.

Parks & Nature

It is a peaceful place to run, walk, or read. There's even a full-size basketball court with 5v5 on the weekends. One interesting point, Viveros is the tree nursery for all of CDMX, which means it's where they start to grow all the trees that are eventually planted throughout the city.

This is my "home mountain" and tallest peak in CDMX. In a place surrounded by them, sometimes it feels hard to get away to the peaks for a good workout or relaxing stroll. Ajusco is your best bet. The mountain sits about an hour's drive from central Coyoacán. Taxi or public transport is an option, but I recommend having a car and/or hiring a guide who has a car. Although there are hikes of all levels, the hike to the summit peak, "el Pico de Aguila", is a medium difficulty (Class II) scramble with a little wayfinding. Given this, I recommend only experienced hikers attempt the summit. Don't hesitate to ask me if you want advice or need a guide.

Sightseeing

The central square of (downtown) Coyoacán (also called el centro de Coyoacán). Don't miss the unforgettable food including churros, elotes/esquites, crepes, gorditas de maiz, tacos, tostadas, comida corrida, and also sit-down restaurants. It's where loads of people from Mexico City and its surroundings come to relax with their families, so it's excellent people watching.

La Conchita is perhaps the second-oldest and second-most famous church and plaza in all of Mexico. It's a nice, quiet place to relax, read, drink a coffee, or enjoy a pleasant conversation with a friend. It was on present-day Fernandez Leal in the 15th C that Hérnan Cortés first built his hacienda in Coyoacán to project his power, launch a faith, and conquer a people. Of course, he also built the still-standing, but delightfully restored, church "de la Conchita" and cobblestone plaza to go along with it.

Shopping

Classic Mexican market, possibly one of the best in the city. It has a little of everything but, for food, don't miss the breakfast spots in the back or the amazing Tostadas Coyoacán (counter service).

For everyone not caught up on Spanish-language literature, Elena Garro was a fascinating writer, a cultural icon, and wife of Octavio Paz. The cultural center is architecturally notable and sits in a beautifully refurbished mansion that meshes old with new. It includes a cafe, bookstore, small movie theater, and various other multi-use spaces. The service is excellent if you're looking for a specific book, by the way.

The Bazaar Sábado in San Angel is the premier artisanal market in the city. From around 10am-5pm every Saturday artists, creators and collectors from all over the region come to San Angel to sell their goods. You will encounter lots of paintings, prints, sculptures, crafts, textiles, antiques and more. Don't forget to check out some of the permanent stores on the outer ring of the Plaza San Jacinto and the Plaza del Carmen as they are some of the finest in Mexico (and very, very pricey, of course). You will encounter several nice restaurants in the neighborhood, and the market draws the normal set of street food vendors for a quick bite.

Entertainment & Activities

The Cineteca Nacional is Mexico's shrine to cinema. Built by the national government, visiting the Cinceteca Nacional is a cherished family activity in the city. More than just movies, this is a place where people go to soak in culture from all over the world. At any given time there will be events, tons of people hanging out, a multitude of food choices, and movies plus documentaries from at least 15 different countries. Note: be careful if you don't read Spanish because, for example, a movie in French will have Spanish subtitles (never English). Check for special exhibitions (e.g. Tarantino takeover).
