Maryborough is a beautiful historic town 35 kms before you arrive in Hervey Bay. It was once the biggest inland port and has many historic buildings. A visit to the Bond Store in Wharf Street is a must to learn the history of the town and region and follow the story trail around the streets. Maryborough has strong connections to Mary Poppins with the author, P L Travers being born in the town. There is a Mary Poppins statue on the corner of Richmond and Kent Sts, and many cafes named in honour of the story. The traffic lights in the centre of town are also very quaint, having Mary Poppins as the walk signals.
