Food Scene

Stylish restaurant serving excellent "Alpine" (Austrian, Southern German) food, like real Viennese schnitzel, goulash and shrtrudel. Not cheap, but worth it.

My favorite Korean restaurant. Located in Kreuzberg, 10 minutes by bike, 15 by public transport. The table bbq is amazing. Make sure you have reservations, esp. on weekend nights!

The place is a bit rustic, but has it's charms. It's run by Italians with a distinct sense of pride in their country's cuisine and its egalitarian (some might say socialist) traditions. Hence read the rules in the menu: e.g. the dishes are served as they are in the menu, no changes allowed; fish and parmigian don't mix, etc. Most importantly: the waiters/waitresses are not your servants. Despite all the caveats: Be nice to the waiter and you'll get one of the best and originally italian pizzas in town at a great price.

Restaurant specializing in any kind of fondues, from light fish and broth fondue to heavy meat or cheese fondue. It's the opposite of fast-food, so you'll need to bring some time, but it's definitely worth it.

This tiny café/creperieis a neighborhood gem run by an energetic French lady in her estimated late fourties whose purpose in life it seems to be to make you understand how a little of butter caramel on your café au lait is all you need to be happy. She does amazing crepes with all kinds of sweet or savory fillings, they make for a great breakfast or lunch.

Drinks & Nightlife

Characteristically low-key, "industrial Berlin chic" bar in Kreuzberg that attracts a very diverse crowd. Thursdays are very populular with gays, Tuesdays with lesbians, but anyone without hangups is welcome any time. Caveat: if you're sensitive to cigarette smoke this is not your place...

How could I omit the infamous Berghain, as it's only a five-minute walk away. You might spend hours waiting in line to get in, and when you finally make it to the door you stand a good chance of being refused entrance without any reasons given, which can be quite frustrating. You can try one of the many tutorials on youtube about "How to get into Berghain", but there's no guarantee. However, if you love cutting edge electronic music and want to get a sense of how Berlin night life earned its apocalyptic reputation, you shouldn't miss it. Queues are shortest Sunday late morning, and you'll still have a good 24 hours to party, as they usually don't close before early Monday afternoon.

Arts & Culture

My all-time favorite museum in Berlin. even though it has only two exhibits: the Pergamon Altar the Ishtar Gate, an original Babylonyan gate of the city wall that was excavated in modern-day Irak in the 19th century and was then, brick by brick, shipped to and reconstructed in this museum which was designed planned and built only for the purpose of showcasing these two objects. (I know it cultural appropriation in the spirit of colonialism, but that's no reason not to see it. ;.))
