The marble wonder of Naxos. This unique Cycladic village is more than an island settlement, Apeiranthos is renowned for the mar- vellous marble stonework that can be found everywhere from the facades of its building to the surface of its small, narrow streets.

I know that when you visit an island you want to go to the beach and we have gorgeous beaches which I will mention later. However, its worth going to some of the villages, (like a day activity thing) its a totally different architecture and landscape up on the mountain. Naxos has the privilege to have both amazing beaches and great mountain landscape. Greek islands are known for the white and blue houses but the mountain houses in Naxos are built from local marble and stone and they have a different architecture if you are interested to see something different. Apiranthos is a picturesque village made almost entirely of marble and stone. The small alleys are amazing, the ambience and the feel of such aa beautiful traditional village are definitely worth the ride up the mountain of Naxos. The food is great too and if you are longing to experience how people in Greece enjoy life in a simple yet quality way, then just spend a few hours at this village.

Apiranthos is perhaps the most authentic village in Naxos and one of the most beautiful places of the Aegean. Apiranthos is nowdays the spiritual center of the island and has a rich tradition and culture. Apart from the archaeological museum, visitors can enjoy the geological museum with rare exhibits, the Folk museum and the museum of Natural History with many plants ad mammal skeletons, as well as beautiful aquarium.

Apeiranthos village is by many considered the crown jewel of Naxos. Much of this belief is due to the fact that over the centuries it has managed to retain its unique authenticity which is apparent in every step you take, in every alley you walk and wherever you look. This is so not just because of the village and its uniqueness on the landscape of Naxos, but also for its nearly 1100 proud inhabitants who have kept their own distinct dialect where even a slightly trained ear reveals their true Cretan origin. Amphitheatrically built at the slopes of Mount Fanari, it boasts magnificent views of the Naxian mountain ranges. As the locals say, while at Apeiranthos, there is no way of telling that you are, in fact, on an island. The feeling one gets is more that of a northern mainland Greece village than that of a Cycladic Island. This is partly due to its architecture and stone built houses but mainly due to its altitude, the centre of the village is located at approximately 600m from sea level. This is no ordinary village, far from it; it is uniquely expressed in its awareness of history from several angles. At Apeiranthos you will find not one or two but 5 museums: the Apeiranthos Archaeological Museum, the Geological Museum, the Museum of Natural History, the Visual Arts Museum and the Folklore Museum, all worth visiting. But its most impressive feature is its architecture. Stone built towers, old houses and churches, marble paved alleys, traditional small souvenir and local craftsmanship shops.
