Kirby Park: nice trails, track for running, sports fields, nice quiet place to sit relax along the Susquehanna River. Just a short walk from downtown and over the Market Street Bridge, the grounds have expansive green space, picnic areas, playgrounds, a fitness trail, pond, walking paths, running track, softball fields, parking lot, volleyball courts, tennis courts, and pavilions. The family of Fred Morgan Kirby, a five-and-dime-merchant who opened his first store in Wilkes-Barre in 1887, gifted the city with the 52 acres known today as Kirby Park. The park hosts special festivals, like the city’s Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration and the annual Cherry Blossom Festival in April. In the winter, the dike and rolling hills are perfect for sleigh riding and snow tubing. In the summer, locals can be seen laying out blankets to soak up some sun and watch the park come alive with children, couples, and pets.

A good running path is over the Market St bridge and looping the park... Kirby Park &its (abandoned) zoo on the other side of the dike by the river were designed by Olmstead, but several floods have destroyed much of his original plan.
