You may be surprised how much you enjoy this place, and it's just up the road! The original hatchery opened in 1920, but was replaced by a brand-new facility in 2002 and is one of the most advanced locations of its kind. Oden rears brown trout and rainbow trout for both inland and Great Lakes waters. There are some lovely walking trails on site.

Our kids went to the hatchery at least once a year while they were growing up--and they looked forward to it. You can feed the fish (only with the food pellets available for sale), at the Big Fish Pond and observe them underwater at the Viewing Chamber, walk the nature trail, explore and souvenir hunt at the Visitor Center. Adjacent to the visitor center sits the re-created 1914-1935 Wolverine train car. This historic exhibit depicts how employees of the old Michigan Department of Conservation lived on the train while transporting and stocking fish across the state. Displays include the sleeping berths, a kitchen, and several uniquely designed stewardship messages. The Oden Hatchery Visitor Center, located on the grounds of the Oden State Fish Hatchery, is the site of the original fish hatchery building which began operations in 1921. In 2002, a new hatchery was built one quarter-mile northeast of the current visitor center. Adults and kids find this self-directed tour of the hatchery a fun way to get to know more about the Great Lakes fishery.

Stroll along approximately two miles of nature trails to see the abundant fish in three spring-fed ponds. Pick up a bag of fish food at the visitor center before starting out so you can get an up-close look. Bicycles and dogs are allowed on the trails
