As one of the largest man-made freshwater wetlands in the tropics, the Putrajaya Wetlands is made up of the Wetlands Park (138 hectares) and the wetland areas (1,977 hectares). It is also recognised by UNESCO as an Ecohydrology Demonstration Site, a place where researchers can observe the interactions between water and the ecosystems. The wetlands has a high rate of biodiversity due to its unique ecosystem. The park offers itself as a place for visitors to rest their eyes on greeneries and take in a breath of fresh clean air, a treat being so near to the concrete jungle of Kuala Lumpur. It is also a popular spot for birdwatching, recreational activities, fishing and water sports. Due to its surroundings, more than 100 species have been spotted around the Wetlands Park, making it a great place for birdwatching. Some of the birds that can be spotted here are Purple Swamphen, Jungle Fowl, Painted Storks, Pelicans, Swans and the Buffy Fish Owls. Birdwatchers can climb up the 18 metre lookout tower located in the Wetlands Park for a bird's-eye view of the area and birds flying around it. Those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground can head to the flamingo pond and the swan lake for an up-close view of the beautiful birds. There are also nature trails and a plant nursery for visitors who are eager to explore the park, complete with a bike rental service for those who prefer to cycle. Putrajaya Wetlands Park in Putrajaya, Malaysia is believed to be the largest constructed freshwater wetlands in the tropics. It is the first man-made wetland in Malaysia, which includes a Wetland Park and the wetland areas . Putrajaya Wetlands consists of 24 wetland cells, Wetlands Park and the other Wetlands areas. The Wetland now is also a wildlife sanctuary which attracts a huge variety of animals to the combined terrestrial-aquatic wetland environment. Several species of local marshland birds and water birds including the little egret, the little green heron and cinnamon bittern, and migratory birds form Northern Hemisphere have been spotted there. Binoculars will come in handy for bird watching. The visitors can also enjoy a leisurely walk, jog or cycle along its bicycle track.
