At the top of a 40m-high column stands a statue of Charles Grey, Prime Minister from 1830-1834. Occasionally visitors are allowed to go up and have a better look at the statue and cityscape. The monument is the one referenced in the Maximo Park song called ‘By the Monument’.

Grade I listed monument to Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey built in 1838 in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne, England. It was erected to acclaim Earl Grey for the passing of the Great Reform Act of 1832 and stands at the head of Grey Street.
