Charcoal kilns used in historic mining days to make charcoal to feed into the smelters. Well interpetived trail winding through cluster of charcoal kilns. Beautiful drive. Travel via Melrose, MT.
Reminiscent of bee hives these charcoal kilns are a legacy of the rich gold mining in the area. In the early days of mining, the lack of rail access made coal hard to come by. Charcoal made in the kilns fueled the smelting activities up the road in Glendale. Little else remains of the smelting town.
