King Arthur's Cave is a limestone cave at the foot of a low cliff at the north-western end of Lord's Wood in The Doward, near Symonds Yat, Herefordshire, about four miles northeast of Monmouth, in the Wye Valley. The cave entrance lies about 285 feet above the River Wye on a hill, with a double interconnected entrance and two main chambers. It is protected as a nature reserve under the Herefordshire Nature Trust. There is evidence that the cave was occupied by man during the Upper Palaeolithic era, and flint tools and woolly mammoth bones have been unearthed within and around the caves

I mean it's only a rumour, but the kids don't need to know that.

Located in the heart of the stunning Wye Valley, Symonds Yat is recognised for it’s limestone gorge scenery and dense native woodland. It has a rich archaeological and industrial history with numerous caves and limekilns scattered around. Some of the nearby caves (including King Arthur’s Cave) have been found to contain the bones of Sabre-Tooth Tigers, Hyenas and Mammoths as well as signs of human habitation from as long ago as 12,000 years. You can access King Arthur's Cave on foot from the cottage. There are maps and guidebooks there to give you more information.

A public footpath leading down to a former limestone quarry and a natural rock face ending at King Arthur's Cave. Access is straightforward, and the main track leads on beyond the reserve into woodland managed by the Forestry England which links with both the Wye Valley Walk and other footpaths within Lord's Wood.
