If you are up for a 3 hour round-trip drive, the Guayabo Ruins are an absolute must-see. The drive is easy and gorgeous as you pass through several micro-climates. These are considered to be the most significant ruins between those left by the Mayans in Mexico and the Incas in Perú.

It is one of the most important archeological sites in Central America. Inhabited approximately between 1000 BC and 1400 AD, it consists of Pre-Columbian stone roads, housing monticules, bridges, water tanks, aqueducts, and other historical infrastructure. It's an impressive site filled with history and traces of the first American civilizations. It's said that this was a commerce route between northern and southern American indigenous populations (Aztecs, Mayas, Incas, etc.). It's also a great place to go hiking through the Costa Rica rainforest with well-kept trails where you'll surely see a wide variety of tropical flora and fauna - great for birdwatching.
